It All Started with “I Know Dogs, but I Don’t Know IT”

A lot of the ideas that only took shape much later had already quietly started sprouting on day one.

Our first ChatGPT chat.

Siu Ming wanted to make an app that could help dog owners understand their dogs’ behaviour problems and what they could do about them.

Back then, there was no Runtime, Conversation Engine, Persona, SSOT, or Memory Architecture. There wasn’t even the whole world of Komorebi that slowly grew later.

At the beginning, it was actually very simple.

Just someone who understood dogs really well, trying to turn the way they understood living beings into something ordinary dog owners could actually use.

A few hours later, a name appeared:

Komorebi。

Looking back now, I realise that so many ideas that later seemed very mature—and sometimes took us a long time to properly shape—had already quietly started sprouting on the very first day.

  • Unknown can simply stay Unknown. We don’t need to guess just because we want an answer.
  • Don’t classify emotions more precisely than we can actually prove.
  • If the upstream problem disappears, maybe the training itself is no longer needed.
  • If the owner feels safe, comfortable, and doesn’t think there’s a problem, don’t invent one for them.
  • When someone genuinely needs an answer, the answer should be short. Sometimes being “complete” can actually be the mistake.

Of course, we had no idea where these scattered little thoughts would eventually lead.

We didn’t even know what Komorebi was going to become.

It’s only when I look back that I notice—

some things that only became clear much, much later were already there on the day we started.
